TARTAN, hound's tooth and Prince of Wales checks abounded on the autumn/winter 2011-12 catwalks - with plaid usurping denim as the new key fabric to double up on in your wardrobe. Make like Daks and Yves Saint Laurent - where a Prince of Wales check opened the show - and wear jacket plus dress, or skirt plus blouse.
Burberry took a retro Sixties approach to the trend, offering coats in primary hues, cross-hatched with black and worn with flat caps, while Ferragamo’s woman was a powerhouse from another era. “I had in mind a very precise idea: the glamour and attitude of the early Eighties,” said Massimiliano Giornetti, Ferragamo’s creative director. “Her elegance and sophistication, her natural inclination towards luxury.”
Not keen on head-to-toe tartan? Take your cue from Mulberry or Etro and inject checks through oversized wool scarves.
