The wide-legged one-piece is set to become our favourite party piece for autumn/winter 11-12. The new collections have given us jumpsuits in slinky silk or satin, looks which provide a laidback eveningwear option and retain the glamourous Seventies influence which dominated last season.

Offset the volume of the palazzo pant with a halterneck top half, as seen at Hakaan, or a slender bra top, as seen at Sonia Rykiel. Balmain’s eye-catching sparkle was perfect party wear, while other sleeveless options came in trend ticking jewel tones at Michael Kors. All these looks required minimal accessories, just a thin leather belt and sky-high heels.
The long-sleeved versions call for more – Maria Grachvogel’s black lace one-piece was enlivened with a heavily-feathered belt, while the high-necked versions of Paul & Joe were covered in riotous prints.
The jumpsuit needn’t be confined to evening. Chanel brought a biker edge, its dark fringed voile suits finished with sturdy leather collars and oversized pockets for a toughened up daytime look. Structured tailoring at Osman and Joseph provided versatile options for day, that can be upgraded for evening with a knockout necklace and oversized clutch.
